Top 3 Black and White Photography Tips Monoimages April 25, 2015 Tips & Tricks Tip 1: Blur By adding some well thought out blur to part of a photo you can create some great looking shots. A common example of this is adding blur to water, such as a river or waterfall. You can do this by decreasing the shutter speed using filters, and increasing the F number on your camera. You will also need a tripod to prevent the rest of the image from being blurred. Another way of adding blur is by increasing or decreasing the depth of field. You can do this by changing the f number; a low number will bring the foreground into focus and blur the background, while a larger number will bring everything into focus. Tip 2: Take unique photos You can take unique photos by firstly not taking a picture of something already shot by countless people, and try thinking outside the box. You could try some black and white photography or if you want something more interesting, underwater photography or extreme sports, or something as simple as shooting through glass to create a 3d effect. Tip 3: Shades and lighting Black and white photography is all about shading and light. Try to picture what the final image will look like as a range of different shades of grey, and look for areas of contrast, such as shadows and dark objects. Also strong light sources, such as shafts of sunlight through dark clouds will help create an interesting contrast, but don’t take a picture directly of the sun, as this will likely ruin the picture since the contrast will be too much for the camera to record.
